Unlike conventional UT, which relies on a single crystal emitting a fixed sound beam, PAUT utilizes a specialized probe containing an array of numerous small, independent piezoelectric elements (typically 16 to 128). An advanced digital system pulses these elements sequentially at microsecond intervals. By precisely controlling the timing (phasing) of these pulses, technicians can dynamically steer, sweep, and focus the acoustic beam through a wide range of angles without moving the probe itself.
This generates comprehensive cross-sectional views (S-Scans and C-Scans), mapping out internal flaws in real-time with supreme visual clarity.
Key Applications: Critical weld inspections on high-pressure pipelines, heavy structural steel connections, nozzle-to-vessel configurations, aerospace composite testing, and processing plant asset-integrity assessments.
